How to Plan your Apostle Islands Elopement; Inspiration from Chelsea & Josh’s Adventurous Sailboat Elopement Experience

I recently had the extraordinary experience of capturing Chelsea and Josh’s sailboat elopement at the Apostle Islands. This adventurous couple created a full day of experiences that reflected their story and personalities. Let’s dive into this adventurous sailing elopement, and learn more about how you can plan your own Apostle Islands elopement adventure.

Why the Apostle Islands Were the Perfect Choice for Chelsea and Josh

Chelsea and Josh’s relationship began during a college summer job, and turned into a 13-year love story. Three years ago, on a quiet Wednesday evening, Josh proposed in the comfort of their home. The way they approached their engagement—unexpected, intimate, and meaningful—became a foundation for planning an elopement experience that was equally personal.

Chelsea & Josh had visited the Apostle Islands before, and loved their experience, so choosing this place for their elopement was a no brainer! They knew they didn’t want the big wedding, and to avoid family disagreements, they chose to elope with just the two of them in secret. True North Sailing Charters was the perfect choice to captain their sailing experience. With hair and makeup done by Victoria Laessig, and Florals by Wild Hollow Farm, Chelsea made a stunning bride ready for an adventurous elopement.

Setting Sail to Hermit Island

We began our adventure by boarding our sailboat with True North Sailing Charters. With clear skies overhead, Chelsea and Josh were ready to set sail toward Hermit Island, one of the quieter Apostle Islands and the perfect setting for their intimate ceremony. The peacefulness of the boat ride gave Chelsea and Josh time to relax and enjoy each other’s company as they prepared to say their vows.

The Beach Ceremony on Hermit Island

Upon arriving at Hermit Island, we made our way to the beach, where Chelsea and Josh’s elopement ceremony would take place. The scene was simple yet beautiful, with the sandy shoreline and Lake Superior as a backdrop. They exchanged vows and rings, and I pronounced them husband and wife as their officiant.

After their vows, Chelsea and Josh walked together along the beach, taking in the first moments of their marriage in a quiet and reflective way. It was a perfect illustration of how an elopement, especially in a location like the Apostle Islands, can be deeply personal and meaningful.

A Bold Post-Ceremony Celebration

After their ceremony was over, Chelsea and Josh wanted to add a bit of daring adventure to finish off their day. We sailed to a nearby spot they could safely jump from, and they took the plunge into the cold lake.

Cliff jumping isn’t something you see in most elopements, but that’s the beauty of an elopement in the Apostle Islands. You have the freedom to include the activities that truly reflect who you are as a couple. For Chelsea and Josh, adding a bit of excitement and spontaneity was exactly what they wanted for their elopement day.

A Relaxing Sail Back with Cake and a Sunset

Chelsea and Josh changed into some dry, comfortable clothes, ready to relax and enjoy the remainder of the sail back to the marina. As we sailed toward the mainland, they celebrated with a small cake and sparking cider, a simple but sweet way to mark the occasion. The setting sun cast the boat in golden light, creating a peaceful atmosphere as they took in the beauty of the Apostle Islands one last time. The sunset sailing back was an incredible ending to the day.

Why a Full Elopement Experience Takes More Than a Few Hours

Chelsea and Josh’s sailboat elopement wasn’t rushed, and that made all the difference. Their half day elopement gave them enough time to explore, relax, and genuinely enjoy their day. The Apostle Islands offer endless opportunities for couples who want a unique elopement experience, but it’s important to set aside more than just an hour or two. A longer timeline allows you to fully experience the islands, whether that includes exploring more secluded beaches, hiking, kayaking, cliff jumping, or simply soaking in the scenery.

Incorporating additional hours (or even days) into an elopement plan can open up possibilities like exploring multiple islands, camping overnight, or hiking to scenic overlooks. The point is, an elopement in a place as unique as the Apostle Islands should be more than a quick ceremony—it should be a day (or days) that you look back on as an unforgettable adventure.

1. Choosing Your Ideal Elopement Activities

When it comes to planning an Apostle Islands elopement, think about what activities will make your day feel uniquely yours. The islands are known for their adventurous options. Here are a few ideas:

  • Sail to a Remote Island: Like Chelsea and Josh, consider booking a charter with True North Sailing Charters to sail to a quiet island like Hermit or Stockton Island. Sailing is not only a beautiful way to travel but also offers the chance to immerse yourself in the natural scenery of Lake Superior.
  • Explore the Sea Caves: The Apostle Islands’ sea caves are stunning and accessible by kayak. Unless you’re both very experienced sea kayakers and have all your own equipment, you’ll want to book with a kayaking tour guide to safely explore these sea caves.
  • Cliff Jumping and Swimming: If you and your partner love adventure, find a safe, approved cliff-jumping spot and take the plunge! Not only will it make for unforgettable photos, but it’s also a fun way to celebrate your new beginning together. There are many beautiful swimming beaches all over the Apostle Islands as well.
  • Hiking on the Islands: Many of the Apostle Islands feature beautiful trails that take you through forests, along cliffs, and even to historic lighthouses. Stockton Island, for example, has several hiking trails.
  • Sunset Cruise: A sunset cruise is a romantic way to end your day. Many charter companies offer customizable itineraries, so you can relax, share a private meal, or just enjoy the ride as you sail along Lake Superior. Here are approved sailing charters by the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

3. Logistics and Timing Tips

An Apostle Islands elopement requires some planning, especially because you’ll likely need boat transportation and will want to work with the changing weather patterns of Lake Superior. Here are a few logistical tips:

  • Choose the Right Season: The Apostle Islands are most accessible from late spring through early fall, with June through September offering the best conditions for sailing and kayaking. Early fall is especially beautiful as the foliage changes.
  • Plan for a Longer Elopement Timeline: A full elopement experience, like Chelsea and Josh’s, can easily take six-twelve hours or even span multiple days if you want to explore several islands. Allowing plenty of time means you won’t feel rushed and can enjoy the day to the fullest.
  • Book Your Photographer Early: The Apostle Islands are becoming increasingly popular as an elopement destination. Capturing all of these special moments in such a stunning place takes a photographer with experience in adventurous elopements, who can also help you plan your day.
